Cigars at Beer Fest in June

Well this is different.
I just was asked to be a cigar vendor at the second annual Beer Fest in the Poconos. They will be sold under the name "Naked Pleasures Cigars" and to understand why this is the name of my company selling these premium cigars you have to read about the venue, Sunny Rest Resort.

To learn more about this event and Sunny Rest, read this article and I hope to see you there.

California Dreaming

Can you feel it? Yes, it's true, this long harsh winter is finally gone and the warmth of Spring is upon us. Now, I can actually enjoy a cigar outside.

As I have stated in previous posts, I am very lucky to be a photographer in the cigar industry. Besides getting to try some wonderful cigars, I also get to meet the people behind those cigars. One of those is Daniel Marshall, a person in the industry who I greatly respect and admire.

So this weeks pairing is:
 Daniel Marshall Red Label
Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

The Cigar: Daniel Marshall is probably best known for his beautiful humidors. One could be seen in photographs on Arnold Schwarzenegger's Gubernatorial desk. His passion for beautifully crafted humidors is now evident in his line of cigars. Famous for the 24K Gold wrapped cigar, he also has a Red Label line of cigars that is a true premium cigar. Rated 91 in Cigar Journal and 89 in Cigar Aficionado, this cigar did not disappoint me at all.

The Red Label cigars are made from choice tobaccos and it boasts premium Nicaraguan wrapper, binder and filler from different regions of Nicaragua giving this cigar it's complexity. The cigar had an excellent draw with very creamy smoke. The Daniel Marshall Red, has wonderful deep notes of espresso, dark rich cocoa and nuts. A premium cigar that I was pleased to enjoy immensely. I now know why is is a favorite cigar of the Ex-Governor of California and many other cigar aficionados.

The Wine: The Francis Coppola Cabernet Sauvignon from their Diamond Collection was suggested by Daniel Marshall as one of his favorite wines to pair with his cigars, and I couldn't agree more.

This wine is very smooth and fruit forward. The scent of blackberries and some pepper are evident from the beginning. Then you get that rich Cabernet Sauvignon flavors of ripe plums with a smooth silky finish. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot 1% Petite Sirah and 1%  Syrah. It was aged in French Oak barrels for 12 months which gives this wine it's long and smooth finish.

The Pairing:
It was a beautiful Spring evening, I had just finished a wonderful steak dinner when I lit up the Daniel Marshall Red and popped the cork of the Francis Coppola Cabernet Sauvignon.

From the first puff and sip I was hooked.
These two paired wonderfully well and were the perfect evening to a beautiful day. The complexity of the cigar was balance very well by the deep fruit notes in the wine. The tastes didn't compete they became a wonderful harmonious blend of tastes.

Another great thing about this pairing is the price;
The Daniel Marshall Red robusto will run you around $6.00 while the Coppola Cab is under $15.00

A very nice pairing for a reasonable price. This one is a pairing I will definitely repeat.
Give it a try and let me know your thoughts.

The Cost of Location, Cigar Tax by State

When we talk about the quality of life a cigar brings we rarely talk about the cost.

When I mention the cost of a cigar in my pairings I usually talk about the cost based on Pennsylvania or on-line retailers where tax is not an issue.

But if say, you lived in Utah and went to your local brick and mortar retailer a $5.00 cigar would cost you $9.30! The reason being the 86% tax the state of Utah imposes on your cigar.

Taxes in the US by state range from zero in Florida, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania to the whopping 95% in Minnesota. This with the sweeping bans on public smoking bans have made it much harder and more expensive for us to enjoy this pastime.

FDA Comment Period

A few weeks ago I posted about the FDA's over 200 page announcement about the restrictions it is planning on imposing on the tobacco industry.

My post I guess was too subtle because I received no comments and I did not see any forwards etc.

If you read my blog then you are a cigar lover. Those same cigars are going to be regulated out of existence if we do not step up and intelligently voice our opinion.

You now have the chance. The FDA uses public dockets through the Federal Register to solicit information from all stakeholders on a number of specific issues related to implementation of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. You now have less than 75 days remaining in the comment period.

Not comments on blogs, or to your Congressman, but on the official FDA website.

These comments all have to be read and answered by the FDA. The last time something like this happened in the tobacco industry was when the FDA was making a ruling on menthol cigarettes. There were so many comments it took them 5 years to answer them all before they could continue the process. We have a shot here. The FDA is already thinking about making an exemption for premium cigars but they need to hear from you.

The information you need is:

Docket No. FDA-2014-N-0189-0001

This is where you can intelligently state our case for the premium cigar exemption in the Tobacco Control Act.

If you are not sure what to write, the Cigar Rights of America website has talking points for your comment.

Do NOT think that some other guy will write a comment and things will be ok.
This is as serious as it gets.

It doesn't matter what your political affiliation is, what matters is that you are a person who enjoys the freedom to smoke a premium cigar.

Do your part to protect this quality of life.

Please, don't wait, you only have till July.

Act Now.

CigarFest 2014

As I have mentioned in previous posts, I am very lucky to be a professional photographer in the cigar industry. One of my favorite perks is photographing CigarFest. For those of you who are unaware of this event, you must be living in a cave, it is the largest cigar event in the world. It last 5 days with all the fringe events and the main events feature all the industries major players handing out cigars and also many great raffle prizes, including a brand new custom Jeep.
This year was in my opinion, one of the best in recent history. Not only did Cigars International really break out all the stops, they also added a pipe event to help launch a new line of pipe tobacco from Drew estate. And if that wasn't enough, you had extra giveaways from Gurkha, Alec Bradley, Hoya de Nicaragua,  Drew Estate, Rocky Patel and Sam Leccia. Oh yes, did I mention Sam Leccia riding a tricked out bicycle chopper dressed as a "Luchador" to promote his new cigar?

The picture above is the basic bag of goodies you get the only thing missing is the nice duffle bag you get with it. Over 80 premium cigars, a duffle bag, a custom humidor and matching ashtray all for $125 ticket.
All of this plus golf tournaments, 2 concerts, live music all day, food drink and some great cigar deals.

There were cigar lovers at this event from all 50 states and also some international herfers.

If you are a cigar lover, this event is for you.

You can check out some photos from the events on their website CigarFest.

Interview with Sam Leccia

My good friends had the opportunity to interview the one and only Sam Leccia from Leccia Tobacco. The maker of Leccia Black and White and to be release on Monday, May 5th, his newest cigar "Luchador."
